RANDALL'S ISLAND, NY (May 8, 2010) – Despite racing in extremely windy conditions at the NYC Qualifying Challenge at Icahn Stadium on Saturday, the women's track and field team saw a school record broken highlighting the Brewers' impressive overall performance in difficult conditions.

“It was incredibly windy today, with gusts up to 40 miles per hour and that really changed our game plan,” said head coach James McCowan. “The long distance events were especially difficult in the conditions.”

In the short distance 100 meters hurdle event, sophomore Katy Hwang proved unaffected by the wind, setting a new Vassar record with a time of 16.48, followed by freshman Kate Warrick who recorded a personal best of 16.95.

Running in the final race of her career, senior co-captain Nina Huang turned in a strong showing in the 1,500 meters.

“Nina's put in lots of hard work and we're definitely going to miss her,” said McCowan.

Also running in her final race was senior Kathleen Dwyer, who along with sophomore Melissa McClung took on the challenge of running the 5,000 meters.

“Kathleen and Melissa put forth tremendous effort in today's most difficult race,” said McCowan. “Had the conditions been better, I know they would have had personal bests.”

Freshman Kelly Holmes raced the 800 meters, recording a time of 2:25. Although her time did not qualify her for the event in next weekend's ECAC Championships, she does have a qualifying time in the 1,500 meters.

“Kelly's heat went out too slow for what she was trying to do in the 800 today,” explained McCowan. “However, I'm looking forward to seeing what she can do in the 1,500 next weekend.”

McCowan also noted the impressive performances of freshmen Tiffany Marchell in the 400 meters, and Laura Van Eerde in the javelin throw.

“Tiffany's proven she's going to be a very strong competitor for us in years to come,” said McCowan. “Laura is just an excellent technician of javelin and she will only get better.”

Sophomore Brittany Davis had a strong performance in the 3,000 meters steeplechase, with a time of 12:29.27.

"Less wind and Brit surely would have hit the ECAC mark," said McCowan. "She is a consistent hard worker, and it was exciting to see things really come together for her this season as she dropped 30 seconds off her time throughout the course of the year."

Holmes and sophomores Johanna Spangler and Elizabeth Forbes will represent Vassar at the ECAC Championships next weekend.
