POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (May 24, 2010) -- Complementing his program-first Liberty League Rookie of the Year selection, Vassar College baseball's
Mike Perrone continued to garner accolades for his impressive freshman season, as he was named to the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA)/Rawlings All-New York Region Third Team.
Out of the 50 total players selected to the First, Second, and Third teams, Perrone was one of just two freshmen and one of just nine player who were not juniors or seniors. Perrone was one of 11 Liberty League players chosen out of the 40-team New York Region.
The last time Vassar had an All-Region selection was in 2005, when Kristaps Aldins, an '05 graduate and the league Player of the Year, was named to the NCAA All-Region team.
Perrone started every single game at shortstop and lead-off hitter for Vassar and was named the 2010 Liberty League Rookie of the Year as well as All-League Honorable Mention. A three-time Liberty League Rookie of the Week, Perrone led the league in batting average (.434), hits (66) and stolen bases (36). He set Vassar's single season record for hits, surpassing the 64 Aldins had in 2005 when he was
Player of the Year. Perrone led the Brewers in nearly every offensive category: batting average (.434), at bats (152), runs (39), hits (66), triples (3), slugging percentage (.493), on base percentage (.485), and stolen bases (36). Perrone, who struck out just six times in 152 at bats, had at least one hit in all but six games and had multiple hits in 20 games, including three four-hit games and nine three-hit games. He had at least one hit in seven straight games to begin the season. Incredibly hard to stop on the base paths, Perrone stole multiple bases in eight games including four against Rochester, three against Hamilton, and five against Union. He drove in a season-high three runs to go with four hits and a double, four runs, and two stolen bases in a 15-8 win against New Paltz. His other four-hit games came against league teams, St. Lawrence and RPI. Extremely quick with a powerful arm, Perrone made numerous difficult saves at shortstop throughout the season.
Over the final seven games of the season Perrone averaged 2.4 stolen bases per game, culminating with five stolen bases in the final game of the year, an 8-2 win over Union. In the weekend series against Union, Perrone was 11-for-12 on the base paths and on the second day, he accumulated six hits and seven stolen bases to lead the Brewers to a program first league doubleheader sweep with 14-9 and 8-2 wins on May 9.
Beyond setting the single season hits record, Perrone also set new single season marks in at-bats (152) and assists (119), ranked second in batting average (.434) and on base percentage (.486), third in stolen bases (36) and fourth in runs scored (39). Additionally, in just one season Perrone ran himself onto the all-time career steals list, as he is tied for ninth.
The Brewers concluded the season 10-27, 5-19 in the Liberty League, the most overall wins since 2005, tied for the most ever league wins in program history and the program's best finish since the league moved to four-game series. Vassar led the league in stolen bases and set a new single season program mark with 111 stolen bases.
