Pontee & Mattelson to Represent Vassar at NCAA Singles Championships

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (May 25, 2010) -- Vassar College will be well represented when the top 32 male and female tennis players in Division III meet at the NCAA Singles Championships from May 28-30. Senior Nicole Pontee will represent the women's team at the University of Mary Washington while senior Mike Mattelson will head to the men's championships at Oberlin College. The singles draws will be released on the final day of the team championships, May 27.

For Pontee, a two-time ITA/NCAA All-American, it is the third consecutive trip to the singles championship. In 2008, Pontee won two matches as an unseeded player to advance to the quarterfinals, including an upset over the No. 8 seed in the opening round. In 2009, she advanced to the round of 16, again upsetting the No. 8 seed as an unseeded player. Pontee is 25-3 in singles play this year, and was named the Liberty League Player of the Year for the third consecutive season. Pontee is ranked No. 6 in the Northeast Region and No. 12 nationally.

Mattelson, also the Liberty League Player of the Year, is making his first appearance in the singles championship. However, Mattelson is no stranger to the national stage, playing in the ITA National Small College Championship in October after winning the ITA Northeast Regional Championship, the program's first ever ITA singles champion. Mattelson is 21-6 in singles play this season and is ranked No. 6 in the Northeast Region and No. 16 nationally.
