SPRINGFIELD, MA (May 10, 2010) – For the second time this academic year, sophomore Johanna Spangler has won an ECAC Championship. On Thursday afternoon, Spangler used a potent kick in the last 400 meters of her 10000 meter race to narrowly edge freshman Jennifer Gossels of Williams to claim the championship with a 36:21.89 time at the annual meet held at Springfield College.
Earlier this year, Spangler captured the ECAC Cross Country Championship, and Thursday's victory – less than a second better than Gossels' 36:22.34 time – was equally as gutsy. Spangler used a 75 second final 400 meter kick to edge into victory in a field that featured 21 runners.
The race began slowly, and Spangler sat back patiently, running an 18:22 5000 meters. Slightly after the halfway point in the race, Spangler took control, taking over the race for the final 10 laps, only to be pushed by Gossels in the final two laps.
“This is an exciting win for Johanna and our program,” said head coach James McCowan. “We have never had an ECAC Track Champion before and what was impressive for Johanna is that the women (Gossels) that Johanna outkicked to win the race, is going to the NCAA Championships.”
With the victory, Spangler earned the Brewers 10 points and put the Brewers in 6th place in team rankings. With Kelly Holmes competing in the 1500 meters and Elizabeth Forbes competing in the 5000 meters on Friday at the ECAC's, Vassar has an opportunity to earn meaningful points in the championships, a first for the program.
Spangler will next compete at the Oneonta Twilight Qualifier Last Chance on May 20.
Last season, Spangler competed in the ECAC Championships 5000 meters and finished 7th in a field of 17 runners.
