POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (May 11, 2010) – No stranger to the postseason, the Vassar College women's tennis team learned on Monday that it had been selected to compete in the NCAA Division III Championship for the eighth consecutive season and the 11th time in program history.
The Brewers (18-2), ranked No. 17 nationally and No. 7 in the Northeast region in the most recent Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll, will face Transylvania University (14-6) at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia on Friday at 2:00 p.m. for a first round match. With a win, Vassar would move on to face No. 6 Washington & Lee University on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. The Regional final is set for Sunday at noon.
“The team is proud to qualify for the NCAA Championship for the eighth consecutive year,” said head coach
Kathy Campbell. “The players work extremely hard to earn this, and it is a well-deserved opportunity to compete at the highest level.”

In each of the last three seasons, Vassar has won its first match and moved onto the second round. Last year, the Brewers defeated Simmons College, 6-0, and then played defending champion Williams College in the second round. Vassar dropped a 6-1 decision to the Ephs who went on to win their second straight national title.
The Brewers captured their eighth straight Liberty League Championship on April 25. Vassar defeated host St. Lawrence University, 8-1, in the semi-finals before downing Skidmore College, 6-3, in the title match.
In terms of postseason experience, the Pioneers are on the opposite end of the spectrum. Transylvania won its first ever Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) title in October, in the process earning the conference's automatic qualifier for the NCAA Division III Championships, another program first for Transylvania.
The Pioneers and the Brewers share no common opponents and this is the first ever meeting between the two schools.
