Perrone & Women's Rowing Varsity 8 Earn Weekly League Honors

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (May 11, 2010) – In the final competitions of their seasons, Vassar athletes from two teams earned weekly Liberty League selections, as baseball freshman Mike Perrone was named the Rookie of the Week, while the women's rowing varsity 8 boat earned Boat of the Week honors.

Perrone capped a remarkable debut season with a four-game weekend in which he batted .556 (10-for-18) with six runs and 11 stolen bases to lead the Brewers to a 2-2 weekend, including the program's first ever league doubleheader sweep, with two wins against Union on Sunday, 14-9 and 8-2. The leadoff hitter, Perrone had a hit in his first at-bat in all four games. He set Vassar's single season record for hits as he concluded the season with 66, surpassing the mark of 64 set by Kristaps Aldins in 2005 when he was named the Liberty League Player of the Year. Perrone, who had no strikeouts in 18 at-bats, concluded the season with an impressive 6-for-9, seven stolen base combined effort on Sunday, including five stolen bases in the second game alone. Perrone finished the season as the league's leader in hits (66), batting average (.434), and steals (36). This is Perrone's third Rookie of the Week honor.

The Vassar Varsity 8 won the Division III Championship at the Aberdeen Dad Vail Regatta in in Philadelphia on Saturday, the largest collegiate regatta in the nation. The Brewers were among six teams to advance to the grand final event, topping the field with a time of 7:55.490 to beat out second place University of Rochester (8:00.396) with Mary Washington University (8:15.952) rounding out the top three. The victorious varsity 8 featured senior captain Christina Peltier (stroke), sophomore Hannah Siebens (7 seat), junior Alina von Korff (6 seat), sophomore Kamela Caschette (5 seat), senior Nicole Clark (4 seat), senior captain Caroline Jolley (3 seat), junior Kate Frost (2 seat), freshman Emma Russell (bow), and sophomore Jessica Panico at coxswain.
