TROY, NY (April 24, 2010) –- Securing qualifying times for the ECAC Championships on May 13 was the buzzword for head women's Track and Field coach
James McCowan following an afternoon in which three Brewer athletes put themselves in strong position to earn a spot in the championships after producing distinguished efforts at the Capital District Track Meet at Rensselaer on Saturday afternoon.
Junior
Brittany Davis in the Steeplechase, freshman
Kelly Holmes and freshman
Laura Van Eerde in the javelin all had outings that put them on the brink of earning an ECAC qualifying marks if their improvement follows course in the next several weeks.
In the Steeplechase, Davis finished third in 12:02.26, just off the 12:00 flat time needed for ECAC's. “Brittany is having a great season and each week she is closing in on running a qualifying time,” said McCowan. “She is clearly headed in that direction.
In 800 meters, Holmes ran a 2:20.61 which is one second off an ECAC qualifying time. “Kelly ran a smart and tactical race,” said McCowan. “It was an exceptionally strong performance and she can improve on today's effort, which is really exciting.”
Van Eerde was third in the javelin with a throw of 34.84, which is just 16 centimeters off an ECAC qualification.
In the 1,500 meters, sophomore
Elizabeth Forbes finished fifth with a personal best of 4:57.01. “Elizabeth really ran a gutsy race and led for a good portion of it,” said McCowan. “She just got caught up in a sprint finish, but it was none-the-less a very strong performance.”
Freshman
Tiffany Marchell ran a 13.62 in the 100 meter dash, an ever-improving time for her.
McCowan noted a strong performance in the hurdles by sophomore
Katy Hwang. She was third in the 100 meters at 17:08 and fifth in the 400 meters with a time of 1:09.41. In the 100 meters, freshman Katie Warrick was fifth with a 17:74 time.
In the 200 meter dash, Marchell ran a strong 27:68 time in a field that was dominated by the first six finishers coming from Division I Albany.

The 4 x 400 relay team set a season best time, finishing second in 4:13.51.
“I am very happy with our last full team meet heading into the Matthew Vassar Open,” said McCowan. “We have several athletes knocking on participating in the ECAC Championships, which is very exciting, and as a team we have broadened our base, improved each week and making good progress with the program.”
The Matthew Vassar Open will be run at the Vassar Track next Friday night, October 30 at 7:00 p.m.
