Box Score

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 21, 2010) – After falling behind 8-0, the Vassar College baseball team never drew closer than three runs against Purchase College on Wednesday, in a 13-9 non-Liberty League loss at Prentiss Field.

The Brewers fall to 6-20 and head into a Liberty League weekend against Rensselaer with a 2-14 league record. Vassar plays a doubleheader at Rensselaer on Saturday beginning at 12:00, and will host a twinbill against the Engineers on Sunday, also starting at 12:00 p.m. The Panthers improve to 11-16 and host a Skyline conference doubleheader against Mount Saint Mary College on Saturday beginning at 12:00 p.m.

The Panthers scored their first run in the third inning, as senior captain Jared Isaacson blasted a solo home run well over the left field fence, but the real damage came in the following inning as Purchase scored seven runs on six hits. Consecutive doubles from George Kennedy and Alex Sobiecki to start the inning quickly gave the Panthers a run. A sacrifice but from Jack Lappin moved Sobiecki to third and the next five batters reached, including a two RBI single from Isaacson, an RBI single from Dan Stroud, and an RBI double from Austin Groves that chased sophomore reliever Race Bottini who had entered the game at the top of the inning. Freshman Zander Mrlik came in to pitch for the Brewers, recording the final two outs of the inning.

The Panthers' big fourth inning awakened the Vassar offense, however, as the Brewers scored three runs off reliever Sean Lafaye in the bottom of the inning. Junior outfielder Devon Luongo reached base on a fielder's choice, advancing to third on a single from senior outfielder Ari Glantz, who then stole second. An RBI groundout from sophomore outfielder Sal Costanzo scored Luongo and the Brewers tacked on two more with two outs on an RBI single from junior designated hitter Joe Castilla who then scored on a double to right center from junior third baseman David Ringold.

The Brewers added another run in the fifth as sophomore second baseman Liam Lee was hit by a pitch with one out and scored from first as he raced to third on a bunt single from Perrone, and came home when the throw from first to third went wide.

After Purchase scored two runs in the seventh, Vassar plated three in the bottom of the eighth to make it a three-run, 10-7, game. Perrone drew a leadoff walk, stole second, and came around to score on a single from Luongo. A walk to Glantz, followed by a wild pitch put Luongo on third and Glantz on second, with a sacrifice fly from Castilla scoring Luongo and a two out single from Ringold driving in Glantz.

However, the Panthers gave themselves a comfortable cushion in the top of the ninth with three runs, the big hit coming on a two-run single from Isaacson. Although the Brewers loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the inning, they got just two runs out of the situation, scoring on a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly from Glantz.

The Brewers had eight hits, led by Ringold's 2-for-4, two RBI, one double effort. Perrone went 2-for-3 with one run scored and one stolen base from the leadoff spot, while Castilla had one hit and two RBIs.

Vassar's pitchers struggled against the Panthers, allowing 18 hits and six extra base hits. Isaacson went 4-for-6 with five RBIs and two runs, Groves was 4-for-5 with one RBI, one double and one run, and Kennedy had two doubles in a 3-for-5, two run performance. Sobiecki and Lappin contributed two hits, one double, one RBI, and two runs apiece.

The Brewers used six pitchers as sophomore starter Dennis Tario (1-4) took the tough-luck loss, allowing just one earned run -- Isaacson's home run -- on four hits in three innings. Purchase also sent six pitchers to the mound, with starter Chris Carboni earning the win to improve to 4-3 as he allowed just one hit and struck out two in three innings of work.
