Andrew Guzick were named Performer and Rookie of the Week, respectively, while women's tennis senior
Nicole Pontee earned Performer of the Week honors, and women's track and field freshman
Laura Van Eerde was named Rookie of the Week.
Michael Mattelson, Senior, Men's Tennis Performer of the Week
Mattelson was named the Outstanding Player in the Liberty League Championships after leading the Brewers to their second-ever title and their first since his freshman year, with a 5-0 sweep over Hobart in the semi-finals and a 9-0 victory over St. Lawrence in the championship match. He won all of his singles and doubles matches. Against St. Lawrence, he defeated Michael Hayden 6-0, 6-3 at No. 1 singles and at No. 2 doubles teamed with
Max Willner for an 8-4 victory over Chris McDonald/ Ren Gates. Mattelson is 21-5 in singles and 20-5 in doubles this season. This is the ninth time Mattelson has earned Performer of the Week honors this season, raising his career total to 16.
Andrew Guzick, Freshman, Men's Tennis Rookie of the Week
Guzick was a sensation in the Liberty League Championships, sweeping all of his opponents to help lead Vassar to the title. Against St. Lawrence in the championship match, which the Brewers won 9-0, Guzick defeated Philip Jackley 6-4, 6-1 at No. 3 singles and teamed with his brother Ben at No. 1 doubles for an 8-5 win over Tony Wilkey/ Philip Jackley. In a 5-0 win over Hobart in the semifinals, Guzick won his singles match 6-0, 6-0 over Alex James and his doubles match 8-2 over Bruce Grant/ Alex James. He is 18-4 in singles and 20-5 in doubles this season and has been named Rookie of the Week eight times.
Nicole Pontee, Senior, Women's Tennis Performer of the Week
Pontee, ranked No. 8 individually in the Northeast, defeated MIT's Leslie Hansen, ranked No. 7 in the region, with remarkable efficiency, 6-0, 6-1, improving to 22-4 in singles. Pontee's win at No. 1 singles, along with an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles with sophomore
Joy Backer, boosted Vassar to a sweep of MIT on Sunday as Vassar finished the regular season 16-2. This is Pontee's ninth Performer of the Week honors this career, and the 24th of her career.
Laura Van Eerde, Freshman, Women's Track & Field Rookie of the Week
Adding to her impressive debut season, Van Eerde claimed the title of 2010 Javelin Champion in her first ever Liberty League Championships, as she won the javelin with a throw of 31.41m. Van Eerde has now been named Rookie of the Week three times.
