Brewers Crowned Liberty League Champions With 9-0 Sweep of St. Lawrence

Vassar College won their program's second Liberty League Championship

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 18, 2010) - The Vassar College men's tennis team captured the program's second Liberty League Championship with a 9-0 win over St. Lawrence Sunday afternoon at the Josselyn Tennis Courts.

The 2007 and 2010 Liberty League Champion Brewers (14-2) will face the ITA no. 8 Amherst College this Saturday, April 24 at 1:00 p.m. The Saints (12-5) host Hamilton College Wednesday, April 21 at 4:00 p.m.

The no. 3 doubles team Josh Jasso and Greg Katz picked up the first point for the Brewers with an 8-5 win over St. Lawrence's Chris Rodilosso and Will Cook, stylishly finishing with a Jasso ace out wide on the deuce side.

Vassar's brotherly duo of Ben Guzick and Andrew Guzick rolled past St. Lawrence's Tony Wilkey and Philip Jackley 8-5 at the no. 1 position.

Michael Mattelson and Max Willner knocked off Chris McDonald and Ren Gates of St. Lawrence, with Mattelson delivering an emphatic overhead to complete the doubles sweep.

“We expected to set the stage with our doubles,” said head coach Ki Kroll, “and all three spots came out and gave solid performances.”

In singles, Vassar senior captain Mattelson raced to a 6-0, 6-3 win at the no. 1 spot over Michael Hayden of St. Lawrence.

At no. 3 singles, freshman Andrew Guzick clinched the title for the Brewers with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Philip Jackley.

“St. Lawrence battled in the first sets but we found our rhythm and it went smoothly after,” said Kroll.

Katz and Arthur both split sets and survived the super tie-breakers to complete the sweep for the Brewers. Vassar's Arthur outlasted Gates 6-2, 2-6, (10-4) and Katz pulled a come-from-behind 2-6, 6-0, (13-11) win over McDonald.

“Nobody wanted to give anything away and everyone wanted to contribute to make it a complete victory,” said Kroll.
