CAMDEN, NJ (April 11, 2010) – The Vassar College women's rowing team opened its spring racing season in impressive fashion, with three medals at the Knecht Cup hosted by Villanova University on the Cooper River Race Course, an event featuring more than 40 colleges.
The Brewers took home a first place finish in the varsity 4 and two third place finishes in the varsity 8.
The Vassar varsity 4 won the grand final with a time of 7:58.54. The Brewers out-raced second place Carnegie Mellon (8:13.63) and third place Catholic University (8:20.06) with Mary Washington, Rutgers-Camden, and Marietta rounding out the field. The four person crew with coxswain was made up of seniors
Christina Peltier (stroke),
Caroline Jolley (bow), and
Nicole Clark (2 seat). Sophomores
Hannah Siebens (3 seat) and
Jessica Panico (coxswain) complete the line up.
The women's varsity 8 edged out Washington College for third in a strong field of crews. Marietta College won the event with a time of 6:58.50, followed by Mary Washington in 7:03.13, Vassar
with a 7:08.45, closely followed by Washington College 7:08.98. Bryn Mawr and Richard Stockton rounded out the field in fifth and sixth place, respectively. The varsity 8 feature Peltier (stroke), Siebens (7 seat),
Alina von Korff (6 seat), Jolley (5 seat), Clark (4 seat),
Kamela Caschette (3 seat),
Kate Frost (2 seat),
Emma Russell (bow), and Panico at coxswain.
Vassar's second varsity 8 also finished with a medal following its third place showing. Washington College won the event in a time of 7:29.52, followed by Mary Washington (7:32.90) and Vassar (8:05.35) with Richard Stockton, and Rutgers Camden in fifth and sixth respectively. Vassar's novice 4 of Lum (stroke), Guzy (3 seat), Framke (2 seat), Footman (bow), and Bonneau at coxswain competed well but failed to advance to finals in tough 30 plus college entry events.
Next Saturday, April 17, the Brewers will compete at Lake Quinsigamond for a race hosted by Worcester Polytechnic Institute against Bates College, Smith College, and Clark University.
