Liberty League Honors Brewers From Five Teams

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 12, 2010) – Following a weekend in which every Vassar spring team competed, athletes representing five of those teams -- baseball, women's tennis, men's track and field, and men's and women's rowing -- were recognized by the Liberty League on Monday. Baseball senior Ari Glantz was named Performer of the Week, senior Nicole Pontee and freshman Jennifer Ruther represented women's tennis as Performer and Rookie of the Week, respectively, and men's track and field freshman Sam Wagner earned Rookie of the Week honors. Rowing was well represented as the men's varsity lightweight 4 and the women's varsity 4 both earned Boat of the Week honors.

Ari Glantz HS
Ari Glantz, Senior Outfielder, Baseball Performer of the Week

Glantz hit .500 (9-for-18) in a 2-3 week for the Brewers, amassing four doubles, one triple, six RBIs, six runs, four stolen bases, a .833 slugging percentage and a .550 on-base percentage. Glantz was instrumental in both Vassar's wins as he went 5-for-5 with two doubles and a triple, two RBIs, and four runs in the Brewers' 10-9 win over Mount Saint Mary on Wednesday. In Vassar's 9-6 win at Clarkson on Sunday, Glantz was 2-for-4 with a doubles, two RBIs, two runs, and three stolen bases. This is the first career Performer of the Week honor for Glantz, to go with one Rookie of the Week honor.

Nicole Pontee HS
Senior Nicole Pontee, Women's Tennis Performer of the Week

In a 2-0 week for Vassar, Pontee won all her matches at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles. On Sunday, as the Brewers edged league foe Skidmore, 5-4, Pontee and partner Joy Backer earned Vassar's only doubles win, 8-4 over Danika Robison and Nataly Mendoza as the duo improved to 14-4. Pontee then won her No. 1 singles match, 6-4, 7-5, over Robison, improving to 22-3 in singles. Earlier in the week, in a sweep of Hunter, Pontee and Backer defeated Evgeniya Kim and Ericka Jamarillo, 8-4, and Pontee then downed Kim, 6-2, 6-1. This is the eighth time this season Pontee has been named Performer of the Week.

Jennifer Ruther
Jennifer Ruther, Freshman, Women's Tennis Rookie of the Week

Ruther won both her matches at No. 5 singles in a 2-0 week for the Brewers. On Sunday, Ruther earned the decisive victory as Vassar edged league foe Skidmore, 5-4. The Thoroughbreds won their second singles match to tie the score 4-4 while Ruther and Tory Engros were in their second set, and Ruther showed poise under pressure, with a 6-3, 6-4 victory, improving to 18-2 on the season. In Vassar's sweep of Hunter on Wednesday, Ruther did not drop one game in her win over Nora Millman. Ruther has now been named Rookie of the Week on five occasions.

Sameuel Wagner
Sam Wagner, Freshman, Men's Track and Field Rookie of the Week

Wagner placed second in the 1,500 meters in a field of 24 at The College of New Jersey Invitational on Saturday, with a time of 4:05.25. A two-time Rookie of the Week during the cross country season, this is the first such track and field honor for Wagner.


Men's Rowing Varsity Lightweight 4

The Vassar men's lightweight 4 turned in a third place finish in its grand final event at the Knecht Cup hosted by Villanova. The Brewers recorded a time of 7:16.19 to finish behind first place Mercyhurst College (7:01.15) and second place Iona (7:08.19). Loyola, Pittsburgh, and West Virginia completed the field for the grand final event. Vassar's line up was Blake Seidel (stroke), Peter Muhn (3 seat), Morgan Mako (2 seat), Nicholas Perry (bow), and Andrew Tabenkin in the coxswain seat. The Varsity 4 earned the award in the fall, but this is the first honor of the spring season for men's rowing.

Women's Rowing Varsity 4

The Vassar varsity 4 won the grand final at the Knecht Cup on Sunday, with a time of 7:58.54. The Brewers out-raced second place Carnegie Mellon (8:13.63) and third place Catholic University (8:20.06) with Mary Washington, Rutgers-Camden, and Marietta rounding out the field. The four person crew with coxswain was made up of seniors Christina Peltier (stroke), Caroline Jolley (bow), and Nicole Clark (2 seat). Sophomores Hannah Siebens (3 seat) and Jessica Panico (coxswain) complete the line up.
