POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (March 5, 2010) - The Vassar men’s tennis team remains undefeated with an impressive 8-1 victory over the Atlantic South’s no. 12 Christopher Newport University. In a match that was tighter than the score indicates, two doubles matches were decided by two games and three singles matches split sets.
“Don’t let the score fool you,” said head coach Ki Kroll, “they are a strong team and several of the matches could have gone either way.”
The Brewers are undefeated in dual match play at 6-0 and embark on their Spring break campaign to Orlando, Florida where they will face Coe College this Monday, March 7 at 12:00 p.m. The Captains, now 5-4, will host Greensboro on March 20.
Vassar took control of the match winning at the no. 1 and no. 3 doubles spots to take two of the three doubles points. At no. 1 doubles, Vassar’s
Michael Mattelson and
Ben Guzick defeated Christopher Newport’s Dusty Nelson and Eric Shulman 8-6. The match was on serve until a turn-around topspin lob by Vassar’s Mike Mattelson delivered the break and the lead at 6-5. Guzick held to consolidate the break extending the lead to 7-5. Mattelson had a gutsy hold at 7-6 to seal the victory 8-6.
Vassar’s
Greg Katz and
Josh Jasso remain undefeated in dual match play, picking up their sixth win beating Christopher Newport’s Martin Brown and Lorenzo Sison 8-6.
All the pieces came together for the Brewers who played well in the clutch to sweep the singles.
“I’m proud of everyone,” said Kroll, “we showed character because it’s remarkable to have everyone come up big at key moments on the same day.”
Freshman
Andrew Guzick notched Vassar’s third singles win to clinch the victory for the Brewers. Guzick flashed a rangy game to smother the net and knock off Christopher Newport’s Gian Heyer 6-2, 7-5.
“This was a big match for Andrew and he stepped up when it counted,” said Kroll, “he can really build on his win.”
At no. 6 singles, senior
Jeremy Arthur recovered from a one-set deficit and fought off six match points to defeat Christopher Newport’s Dusty Nelson 3-6, 6-4, (16-14). Arthur showed heart and relentless defense to come back from a quadruple match point at 9-5 in the super tiebreaker, winning the marathon super-breaker 16-14.
Spirits are high as the Brewers prepare for a competitive Spring break trip, “We’re playing at a high level and we’re all ready to play tennis where it’s meant to be played,” said Kroll, “…outdoors.”
