Rowing Teams Compete in Florida Against Coast Guard and Stetson

DELAND, FL (March 22, 2010) – Finally able to get on the water after a month of training indoors, the Vassar College men's and women's rowing teams competed against Coast Guard Academy and Stetson University during their Spring Break trip to Florida.

The Brewers raced against Coast Guard on Saturday, March 13, rowing two two-minute Varsity 8 pieces. Each school held an 18-stroke per minute pace on the first piece, with Coast Guard finishing two seats ahead of Vassar. In the second piece, the crews held a 24-stroke per minute pace and Vassar finished two seats ahead. The Vassar men's crew paced the eights in a Varsity lightweight 4, and heavyweight 4, both matching the other crews' stroke rate.

On Thursday, March 18 Vassar competed against Stetson. The women's Varsity 8 light crews matched up for a three-minute timed race with Vassar moving out to an open water lead at the end of three minutes. The men raced in lightweight and heavyweight Varsity 4's, finishing with the Vassar lightweight slightly ahead of both Stetson and the Vassar heavyweight crew.

The Brewers were also scheduled to scrimmage against Wesleyan on Tuesday, March 16 but the event was called off due to afternoon wind and waves on the lake.

Competing in Vassar's women's Varsity 8 were coxswain Jessica Panico, 8-seat Christina Peltier, 7-Hannah Siebens, 6-Alina von Korff, 5-Caroline Jolley, 4-Nicole Clark, 3-Kamela Caschette, 2-Kate Frost, and bow-Emma Russel.

The men's Varsity Heavyweight 4 consisted of coxswain Andrew Tabenkin, 4-Vincent Marchetta, 3-Kyle Sullivan, 2-Erik Snow, and bow-Kyle Chea.

In the men's Varsity Lightweight 4 was coxswain Naomi Alpert, 4-Blake Seidel, 3-Peter Muhn, 2-Morgan Mako, and bow Nicholas Perry.

Vassar returns to action at the Knecht Cup on April 10-11 on the Cooper River in Camden, New Jersey, a large regatta with over 50 schools from around the country.
