Five Spring Athletes Honored by Liberty League

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (March 22, 2010) – After strong early season performances, five Vassar athletes earned Liberty League weekly awards on Monday. Baseball freshman Mike Perrone started his career strong with a Rookie of the Week honor, while men's lacrosse senior Sean Murray and women's lacrosse junior Sarah Warner both earned Offensive Performer of the Week recognition. Following their first competition of the year, sophomore Johanna Spangler and freshman Kelly Holmes represented women's track and field with Performer and Rookie of the Week honors, respectively.

Michael Perrone
Mike Perrone, Freshman Shortstop, Baseball Rookie of the Week

Perrone started his collegiate career in impressive fashion, hitting .500 (13-26) in Vassar's first six games as the starting shortstop and leadoff hitter. He was particularly strong in the Brewers' 2-2 performance at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational, batting .579 (11-19) with four RBI, six runs, five stolen bases, two doubles and a triple in four games. In a big 13-9 win over Salem State College, Perrone was 3-for-5 with 2 RBI, a stolen base and a sacrifice bunt, additionally making a difficult diving catch to start a game-ending 6-4 double play. He has three hits in three games and at least one hit in every game this season.

Sean Murray HS
Sean Murray, Senior Attack, Men's Lacrosse Offensive Performer of the Week

Behind the play of Murray, the Brewers evened their record at 3-3 with a 14-4 victory over Castleton State College. In the win, Murray notched three goals and added two assists. This is the first career Liberty League honor for Murray.



Sarah Warner HS
Sarah Warner, Junior Midfielder, Women's Lacrosse Offensive Performer of the Week

Warner, the leading scorer in the Liberty League with 20 goals, had back-to-back five goal games this past week. She tallied five in a tight 13-11 Vassar victory over Eastern Connecticut State. She repeated the feat against SUNY Oneonta in a competitive 19-12 loss. Warner has scored four or more goals 12 times in her career, including four of five games this season. This is Warner's first career Liberty League honor.

Johanna Spangler HS
Johanna Spangler, Sophomore, Women's Track Performer of the Week

Racing for the first time this season, Spangler placed third in the 5,000m at the Willie Williams Invite hosted by the University of Arizona on friday. Spangler notched a personal best and set a new school record with her time of 17:54.58. This is Spangler's first Liberty League honor of her sophomore track season, to go with two track Rookie of the Week and one Performer of the Week recognitions last season.

Kelly Holmes
Kelly Holmes, Freshman, Women's Track and Field Rookie of the Week

In her first collegiate race, Holmes placed fourth in her heat of the 1,500m at the Willie Williams Invite hosted by the University of Arizona on Friday, setting a new school record in the process with a time of 4:53. A five-time Rookie of the Week during the cross country season, this is Holmes' first track honor.
