IRVINE, CA (March 13, 2010) – In its fifth match in six days and the final stop of its Spring Break trip to California, the Vassar College women's team recorded a dominant 9-0 win over Colorado College in Irvine, California on Saturday.
Ranked No. 21 nationally in the most recent Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings, the Brewers improve to 9-2 after going 4-1 on their Spring Break Trip. Vassar returns to action in the annual Seven Sisters Championship, hosted by Smith College on March 27-28.
"I was so pleased with the team's energy level and fitness today,” said head coach
Kathy Campbell. “It was our fifth match in six days. Yesterday's match concluded at 6pm (4 hour match) and we were back on the court warming up at 9:30 this morning. We had fresh legs and played with high energy. This is a credit to the team's dedication to fitness training and thorough preparation.”
Vassar dominated doubles play as senior
Nicole Pontee and sophomore
Joy Backer won 8-1 at No. 1, while the No. 2 pair of sophomores
Jennifer Beckerman and
Nicole Block played their best doubles match of the week winning 8-0. The No. 3 pair of junior
Alyssa Roush and freshman
Natalie Santiago closed out their match 8-6 after being up 3-0 and 4-1 in the match. Colorado College's Deanna Thirkell and Emma Sharer played better and better as the match progressed, but the Vassar duo played with poise and consistency to clinch the match.
Taking this momentum into singles, the entire Vassar team played consistent, yet aggressive tennis and displayed a fighting spirit on the court. The Brewers won all the singles matches in two sets with no Colorado College player winning more than two games in any one set.
“While the final match scores were quite one-sided in our favor, it was a four-hour event and Colorado College really made us work for and structure our points,” said Campbell. “They were tenacious and got lots of balls back. The experience gained on this trip will be a huge asset to our team as we move into the next phase of our season after spring break. We're playing with well-earned confidence and composure--but yet, always looking to improve."
