MYRTLE BEACH, SC (March 10, 2010) – Tied 3-3 early in the second quarter, the Vassar College men’s lacrosse team ignited its high-powered offense and scored five straight goals – two coming from junior attack Nick Cardillo, en route to an impressive 14-5 victory in a Spring Break contest played in Myrtle Beach, S.C. 

The Brewers, now 2-1 on the season, will remain in Myrtle Beach for a March 12 game against Alfred University at 1:00 p.m. Vassar will close out its Spring Break schedule on Sunday, March 14 at Christopher Newport. Medaille, now 1-1, will travel to Alfred for its next game on March 20. 

Vassar dominated every facet of the game, out shooting the Mavericks 40-28 and maintained a 46-36 edge in groundballs. The Brewers caused 17 turnovers and were able to convert those Medaille miscues into goals. The 14 goals represent the highest total for the Brewers since April 8, 2009 when Vassar defeated SUNY Farmingdale 15-9. 

Following their tough 10-9 overtime loss to Manhattanville on Monday, the Brewers led only 2-1 after the first quarter after getting a man-up goal from sophomore attack Christopher Toffoli and an unassisted goal from sophomore attack Jack Gross. 

Medaille got itself back into the game 3-3 following a goal by sophomore attack Tyler Strassburg 2:42 into the second period, but the Brewers went on an offensive tear, took complete control of the contest and closed out the quarter with three straight goals coming from freshman midfielder Ryan McCarthy (his first collegiate goal), junior midfielder Ryan Hart and the eventual game winner on an unassisted goal from junior midfielder Sam Seymour. Hart finished the game with a career-best four goals and an assist. 

Leading 6-3 entering the third quarter, the Brewers got two quick tallies from Cardillo and tacked on two more from senior attack Sean Murray and senior midfielder Dave Bryant for a comfortable 10-4 lead. Behind three fourth quarter goals from Hart and Cardillo’s third of the game, the Brewers increased their lead to 14-5. 

Junior goalie Alex Tice made nine saves for the Brewers.
