SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY (February 6, 2010) – In their final event before the New York State Championships, senior
Jordana Jantze, sophomore
Christie Musket, and freshman
Shannon Sara turned in impressive showings at the Skidmore Sprint Invite, as the Vassar College women's swimming and diving team finished third out of three teams.
William Smith won the meet with 232.5 points, narrowly edging host Skidmore's 221.5 points. Vassar finished third with a score of 191. The Brewers conclude their regular season and next compete at the New York State Women's Collegiate Athletic Association (NYSWCAA) Championships, from February 18-20 in Syracuse, NY.
“We're really focused on the States at this point in the season, and we were pleased with the times we saw today,” said interim head coach Paul Kueterman.
In a debut season that has been full of first place finishes, Sara had a typically strong outing, recording three individual wins, in the 500 Free (5:30.72), 400 IM (4:50.39), and 200 Free (2:02.99).
“Shannon has been so consistent for us all season, so we're really excited to see how she does against the top competition at the States,” said Kueterman.
Jantze took home two first place finishes of her own, in the 50 Free (26.47) and 100 Free (57.85).
“For Jordana to step up in the last meet before her final State Championships is so great to see,” said Kueterman.
Musket, a first-year diver who is having a strong debut season, finished first in the 3-meter with a score of 179.00 and second in the 1-meter (187.80).
The Brewers narrowly missed two more first place finishes, as sophomore
Caroline Shannon and freshman
Sydnie Alquist were out-touched in two races. Shannon finished second in the 100 IM in 1:07.01, while the first place finisher from Skidmore clocked in at 1:07.00. In the 100 Fly, Alquist finished in 1:04.99, .19 seconds off the winning time. Shannon added another second place finish in the 50 Breast (35.12).
Both relay teams placed second. The 200 Medley relay team of Sara, Shannon, Alquist and Janzte finished in 1:59.19, while the 200 Free relay team of Alquist, junior
Meg McCarty, senior
Alyse Larkin and Jantze recorded a time of 1:47.67.
“Today was a good opportunity for us to get ready to swim at States, and I'm confident that with our training and the work we've been putting in all season we're where we need to be at this point in the season,” said Kueterman.
