MOUNT HOLYOKE, MA (February 21, 2010) -- The Vassar Women's Fencing Team finished an impressive fourth out of 15 teams at the New England Championships at Mount Holyoke College on Saturday. The Epee squad repeated its win from last year as all three starting epee fencers made the individual semifinals. Junior Sophie Courser finished second in Epee and junior Julie Carlsen was fourth in sabre competition. Full results are posted at this link:

The Brewers will next compete at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships at Brown on Sunday, March 14, 2010.

• Vassar Women's Team: 4th overall.

• Vassar Women's Epee Squad 1st Place: (Sophie Courser, Caitlin Clevenger, Veronica Weser, Jacinthe Sasson-Yenor)

• Vassar Women's Sabre Squad 7th Place: (Julie Carlsen, Brooke Schieffer, Ariel Hulley, Tracy Bratt)

• Vassar Women's Foil Squad 5th Place: (Katie LeClair, Jackie Kory, Melissa Lee, Katharine Sweeney)

Individual Results:

• Junior Sophie Courser - 2nd place Individual Epee (lost only 2 bouts all day)

• Junior Julie Carlsen - 4th place Individual Sabre

• Junior Jackie Kory - 11th place Individual Foil

• Sophomore Veronica Weser - 11th place Individual Epee

• Freshman Caitlyn Clevenger - 9th in the Individual Epee

• Senior Melissa Lee -- went 10 for 13 in the Foil “C” pool and missed the individual semifinals.
