Haeuser and Guzick Brothers Honored by Liberty League

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (February 22, 2010) – A brother duo and a senior sensation represented Vassar in the weekly Liberty League award selections on Monday, all for the second consecutive week. The brother duo of Andrew and Ben Guzick earned men's tennis Rookie and Performer of the Week honors, while women's basketball senior Emily Haeuser concluded her career with a Forward of the Week award.

Haeuser averaged 16.7 points, 9.3 rebounds, 2.0 blocks, and 2.0 steals per game in her final three games in Vassar uniform. In the last game of her career, a double overtime loss to William Smith on Saturday, Haeuser racked up 26 points and a career high 18 rebounds to record the 35th double-double of her impressive career. She also added four blocks, two steals, and two assists. In a 58-52 loss to Hamilton on Friday, Haeuser had 15 points, six rebounds, and two assists and in Vassar's 59-55 upset of RPI on Tuesday, Haeuser had nine points and three steals.

This is Haeuser's fifth Forward of the Week honor, and her third in February as the senior forward ended her season on a tear, scoring in double digits in 11 of her final 12 games while averaging 17.3 ppg.

Ben Guzick, Sophomore, Men's Tennis Performer of the Week

Guzick remained unbeaten at No. 1 singles and doubles for Vassar, as the Brewers downed Coast Guard Academy, 8-1 on Saturday. Guzick and teammate Michael Mattelson pulled out a close 8-6 win over Greg Mitchell and Chris Pappe at No. 1 doubles. Guzick then went on to defeat Mitchell at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-1.

A transfer from Carleton, Guzick has been named Performer of the Week following both his matches in Vassar uniform this season.

Guzick won both his matches at No. 2 singles and doubles as Vassar defeated Coast Guard Academy, 8-1 on Saturday. Guzick and teammate Max Willner earned an 8-4 win over Nick Martin and Blake Maurer. Guzick went on to win the tightest singles match of the day with a strong comeback victory over Martin, 4-6, 7-6(1), (10-6) . Martin took the first set 6-4 and the battle continued into the second as each player converted two breaks to take the set to a tiebreaker. Guzick flipped his switch and took the second set in dominating fashion -- 7-1 in the tiebreaker -- and then capped off the match with a 10-6 win in the deciding super tiebreaker. In an impressive debut season, Guzick has earned five Rookie of the Week honors.
