SYRACUSE, NY (February 20, 2010) – Going into the final event of the 2010 New York State Women's Collegiate Athletic Association (NYSWCAA) Championships, the Vassar College women's swimming and diving team was just four points ahead of Alfred University, but a strong showing in the 400 Free Relay ensured the Brewers would not drop in the standings as Vassar placed 12th out of 17 teams in the final session on Saturday.
After finishing 12th in the morning preliminaries, the 400 Free Relay team of freshmen
Sydnie Alquist and
Shannon Sara and seniors
Alyse Larkin and
Jordana Jantze moved into the top ten for a 10th place finish in 3:44.42.
“Sydnie led off with a great split and then everyone followed with such strong swims,” said interim head coach Paul Kueterman. “It was a phenomenal race and a perfect way to end the year. In particular, it was so great to see Jordana and Alyse end their careers with such an incredible race.”
The strong relay performance helped the Brewers to finish in 12th with 233 points, warding off Alfred which finished with 221. Ithaca College won the state title with 1,403 points, while Stevens Institute of Technology (1,306) and Nazareth College (909) rounded out the top three.
Completing an impressive sophomore season,
Caroline Shannon gave the Brewers their top individual finish of the day, placing 15th in the 200 Breast, in 2:33.09. Jantze added to her memorable final day swimming for Vassar by finishing 23rd in the 100 Free with a time of 55.97 and Sara also scored for Vassar, placing 24th in the 200 Back (2:21.38).
“Today was our best day and it was because everyone stepped up when they had to,” said Kueterman. “It was a great capstone to the year and everyone really came together to make today our strongest.”
Although they did not make the top eight to advance to the evening finals, divers sophomore
Christie Musket and freshman
Carolyn McLean had strong performances in the morning preliminaries of the 3 meter, accumulating crucial points for Vassar. Musket placed 19th with a score of 288.20 while McLean finished 20th with 282.85 points.
“This was the first state meet for Christie and Carolyn and for them to get us such crucial points when it was so close in the standings was just incredible,” said Kueterman.
Also ending her season on a high note, sophomore
Amy Entwisle dropped 11 seconds from her personal best in the 1,650 Free, with a time of 19:29.89.
The NYSWCAA Championships were hosted by Le Moyne College and held at Nottingham High School.
