SYRACUSE, NY (February 19, 2010) – The Vassar College women's swimming and diving team moved up a spot in the standings on Friday, finishing the day 12th out of 17 teams at the New York State Women's Collegiate Athletic Association (NYSWCAA) Championships, hosted by Le Moyne College at Nottingham High School.
Ithaca College remains in the lead with 906 points, still trailed by Stevens Institute of Technology with 861 points, and Nazareth College with 638 points. The Brewers have 173 points and are trailing Liberty League foe Skidmore College (230 points) for 11th place, while 13th place Alfred University is just nine points behind Vassar.
“We had a few more people get into the scoring and help us move up which is nice to see,” said interim head coach Paul Kueterman. “I'm excited to see if we can continue to move up if not maintain our position tomorrow, hopefully getting even more people in the scoring. The last two days have been great and we really want to finish out the season strong tomorrow.”
The Brewers got strong performances from a trio of young swimmers, freshmen
Sydnie Alquist and
Shannon Sara and sophomore
Caroline Shannon.
“We're competing against some really powerful swimming programs and it's so nice to see our young swimmers respond the way they are,” said Kueterman.
After earning the 24th and final spot in the 100 Fly following the morning preliminaries, Alquist turned in an impressive performance in the evening finals, jumping up to 16th with a time of 1:02.81.
“Sydnie had a great day, moving from 24th to 16th,” said Kueterman. Alquist also anchored the 800 Free relay team consisting of Sara, Shannon, and sophomore
Amy Entwisle that ended the evening with an 11th place finish in a time of 8:22.32.
Shannon took home Vassar's top individual finish of the day, placing 14th in the 100 Breast with a time of 1:12.63. Sara also took home a top-20 finish, placing 16th in the 400 IM (5:00.97).

Jordana Jantze kicked off the evening with a 12th place finish (1:57.38).
The final day of the NYSWCAA Championships begins with preliminaries at 10:30 a.m. and finals at 6:30 p.m.
