SOUTH HADLEY, MA (January 24, 2010) – Although it finished fourth out of five teams, Vassar College women's swimming and diving took home an impressive eight victories out of 20 events at the Seven Sisters Swimming and Diving Championship this weekend at Mount Holyoke College.
Proving the importance of depth, Wellesley College won just three of the 20 events en route to its 13th consecutive title with a total of 1,090 points. The Blue were followed by Smith College (740), Mount Holyoke (667), Vassar (645) and Bryn Mawr College (472).
The Brewers compete in their final dual meet of the year on Saturday, January 30, hosting New York University at 1:00 p.m. In its final showing at Kresge Pool for the season, Vassar will honor its three seniors,
Jordana Jantze,
Alyse Larkin, and
Maeve McCoy.
The competition began with 13 events yesterday and concluded with seven more today. Vassar claimed top honors in eight of the 20 events, but Wellesley's depth proved to be the difference. Sophomore
Caroline Shannon was the top swimmer of the meet, taking home three individual victories. With just 12 swimmers and three divers, the Brewers faced a disadvantage in terms of depth but proved their talent with so many wins.
“We might have finished fourth, but we had a lot of wins and a lot of personal bests, so I can't be anything but pleased with how we performed this weekend,” said interim head coach Paul Kueterman. “I like that we swam so well even if we didn't necessarily finish where we would have liked. All 15 of our swimmers and divers did everything they could.”
Sophomore
Christie Musket opened Sunday by sweeping the diving events with a win in the 3-meter to follow her 1-meter victory on Saturday. She scored a 314.75 in the 3-meter to defeat Smith's Isabelle Harper (311.55), while freshman teammate
Carolyn McLean (299.80) placed third.
Shannon grabbed her third and final victory of the weekend decisively in the 200 Breast (2:32.41), as she tapped in nearly five seconds ahead of Wellesley's Carolyn Jackson (2:37.01). Junior
Meg McCarty finished fifth in the race with a time of 1:58.36.
Following two individual wins on Saturday, freshman
Shannon Sara placed second in the 200 Back, finishing in 2:16.39 to follow Smith's Lily Seidman (2:14.99).
Jantze had a strong showing in the 100 Free, finishing fourth with a time of 57.19, while freshman teammate
Sydnie Alquist also fared well, placing eighth with a time of 57.84.
In the final event of the Championship, the 400 Free Relay, the Brewers took home a second place finish, as Sara, McCarty, Alquist, and Jantze teamed up for a time of 3:48.57 to follow the first place team from host Mount Holyoke that finished in 3:45.75.
Sophomore
Amy Entwisle had a strong showing in the difficult 1,650 Free, placing fifth with a personal best time of 19:40.82.
“We were in contention with every school this weekend,” said Kueterman. “We had the most winners, unfortunately we just didn't have as many swimmers as other schools.”
