TROY, NY (January 16, 2010) – Swimming in a talented seven-team field at the Henry Kumpf Invitational, hosted by Rensselaer, the Vassar College men's swimming and diving team placed fifth on Saturday.
The Brewers (2-3) return to the pool in ten-days, travelling to Montclair University on Tuesday, February 26 for the first of three consecutive dual meets.
SUNY Cortland dominated the event, winning 7 of 13 events to amass 575.50 points. The Red Dragons won the event for the second consecutive year and have won four of the last six years. Ithaca College followed in second place with 530 points while host Rensselaer was third with 476. Clarkson University (262.50) edged the Brewers (210) for fourth place, with Oneonta State (170) and Skidmore (97) rounding out the field.
“They swam great today, especially with all the training we've been doing, ,” said interim head coach Paul Kueterman. “They got up and swam well against quality competition.”
Sophomore
Jack Smart swam two strong individual races for the Brewers, placing second in the 200 Breast with a time of 2:16.12 and finishing fourth in the 200 IM in 2:06.32. Senior
Jeremy Shiman followed Smart in both races with seventh place finishes in the 200 IM (2:09.68) and 200 Breast (2:24.25). Smart also joined freshmen Nicholas Veazie,
Mathue Duhaney, and sophomore
Dustin Molina as Vassar placed fifth in the 400 Medley Relay with a time of 3:52.97.
Duhaney turned in an impressive performance in the 50 Free, placing third (22.46). Veazie gave Vassar another top-five finish in the 200 Fly, finishing fifth with a time of 2:07.35.
Sophomore diver
Greg Sullivan had a strong showing on the 3-meter, placing second with a score of 266.50.
“Greg struggled a bit on the 1-meter [placing eighth with a 221.35], so to see him turn around with the 3-meter was great,” said diving coach Tom Albright. “Like everyone else, he's pretty tired from all the training so I was really happy to see him bounce back on the 3-meter.”
The Brewers closed out the day with a sixth place finish in the 400 Free Relay, as Molina, Duhaney, freshman
Simon Whitelaw and Veazie recorded a time of 3:26.54.
“We have such a nice mix of young talent,” said Kueterman, noting that both relay teams are made up of sophomore and freshman. “For them to see that they can race fast even when they're tired is great. I'm looking forward to continuing the momentum through the end of the season.”
