PURCHASE, NY (September 5, 2009) -- The Vassar College women's volleyball team used a balanced attack to sweep past Manhattanville College 3-0 (25-21, 25-16, 25-12) in a non-conference women’s volleyball action on Saturday afternoon at Kennedy Gymnasium.
The Brewers return to action on Wednesday, September 8 with a road match against Russell Sage at 7:00 p.m. Manhattanville (1-1) continues play on Tuesday night at Lehman College.
Six Brewers recorded at least four kills in the victory, led by the team-high nine kills from freshman
Chloe McGuire and sophomore
Amy Bavosa. McGuire also added 12 digs and two blocks on the afternoon, while Bavosa contributed 11 digs and a pair of service aces as well.
Freshman Hillary Koenigs also played well for the Brewersw, leading all players with 28 assists while also posting five kills and a .455 hitting percentage, helping to keep the Manhattanville front line off balance all afternoon long.
For Manhattanville, sophomore Makana Gomes (Honolulu, Hawaii) recorded a team-best five kills and added 10 digs, while sophomore Ally Johnson (Branford, Conn.) had four kills and a team-high 14 digs.
The first set was the most competitive of the afternoon, as Vassar escaped with a 25-21 win. The Brewers got off to a good start in the opening game, taking leads of 10-4 and 14-7 and looked to be in control after an ace by senior
Sarah Potts game the visitors a 22-15 lead. Back-to-back kills by Gomes and four Vassar errors got Manhattanville back within three at 24-21, but a kill by senior
Tess Johnson finally put the set away for the Brewers.
The second set began much more evenly, as the teams were tied at 10 midway through the frame. A pair of kills by Johnson followed two by Bavosa to knot the score at 12 and force a Vassar timeout. After the break, however, the Brewers took control of the set with an 11-1 run on the serves of Bavosa and junior
Chelsea Mottern. The Valiants hurt themselves with four attack errors during the stretch, which allowed Vassar to win the set, 25-16, and go up by a pair.
Up by two games, Vassar came back and immediately put the clamps on Manhattanville in the third set, as the Brewers won nine consecutive points on the serve of freshman Christina Verdirame in earning an early 15-4 lead and cruising to a 25-12 win and the match victory.
Vassar as a team hit .200 as a team, including 42 kills and 18 errors. Manhattanville was in the red in the hitting department, mustering a -.100 percentage due to to 17 errors and 16 kills.
