POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (September 26, 2009) – Behind goals from the duo of junior captains
Carolyn Demougeot and
Allison McManis, the Vassar College women’s soccer team notched its first Liberty League win of the season, with a 2-1 victory over Hamilton College Saturday afternoon at Gordon Field. It was Vassar’s first victory over Hamilton in 12 years.
The Brewers improve to 4-4, 1-1 in league play, and will host Bard College on Tuesday, September 29th at 7 p.m. at Weinberg Field before traveling to Rensselaer next Saturday, October 3 for another Liberty League contest. The Continentals fall to 3-3, 1-1 in the Liberty League and will host Hartwick College at 4 p.m. on Tuesday before returning to league action to host No. 5 William Smith on Saturday, October 3 at 1 p.m.
The Brewers got on the board in the 31st minute, when sophomore
Jordan Crook tracked down a ball on the left side and crossed it to senior
Anna Robinson in the box. Robinson swiftly kicked the ball to a wide open Demougeot, who slapped the ball into the right corner of the net in her usual smooth fashion, for her team-leading fifth goal of the season.
The Continentals charged right back down the field and looked to tie the game up immediately, as freshman Alex Rimmer found herself alone in the center of the box and blasted a shot that hit the crossbar and was eventually cleared by sophomore
Tessa Verbanic.
Vassar tacked on what wound up being the winning goal with less than ten minutes remaining in the game off a penalty kick from McManis. The kick was rewarded after a foul by Hamilton goalkeeper Kate Fowler in the box. Fowler rushed out of the net in attempt to stop a breakaway by freshman
Keiko Kurita, but took Kurita down in her attempt to maneuver around Fowler. McManis sent the penalty kick on the ground into the right corner of the goal for her fourth goal of the season.
However, the Continentals made things interesting, notching a goal with just over three minutes remaining in the game. An attempted Hamilton cross from the right side bounced hard off the crossbar and landed in the center of the box where sophomore Sarah Boak gathered and bolted the ball into the net. It was Boak’s first goal of the season.
The Continentals held the momentum for the last three minutes and kept pressure on the Vassar defense, but were unable to find the net again.
Hamilton had many offensive opportunities on the afternoon sending multiple crosses into the box and taking a total of 16 shots, doubling Vassar’s total of eight. However, the Brewer defense continued to show its prowess, anchored by freshman goalkeeper
Ali Higgins.
Higgins, now 2-4 on the season, continued her stellar play in goal, totaling seven saves on the afternoon. Fowler totaled two saves and falls to 2-2.
