STATEN ISLAND, NY (September 18, 2009) – A goal late in the first half proved all the offense necessary for a win as the New York University women’s soccer team defeated visiting Vassar College 1-0 on Friday at the College of State Island Soccer Complex.

The loss drops the Brewers to 3-3 heading into Liberty League play. Vassar hosts a league doubleheader next weekend with No. 5 William Smith College on Friday at 4:00 p.m. and Hamilton College on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. The Violets extend their winning streak to five games to improve to 5-1 and will return to the field on Sunday, September 20 against DeSales University at the CSI Soccer Complex.

NYU’s Erin Haggerty tallied her first collegiate goal 2:06 before halftime, on what would prove to be the game-winner. After making several advances into Vassar's final third throughout the opening half, the Violets finally netted their first non-opponent-aided goal in the opening half. Lucy Dolly Caires made a run up the right flank, turned along the endline and unleashed a cross to the far post that Haggerty headed home at the goalmouth.

Although NYU owned a 17-7 edge on shots and generally owned the better of play, the Brewers made things interesting. Vassar's finest chance came with 6:51 remaining in regulation when senior Anna Robinson launched a soaring line drive from 15 yards out, but Violet goalkeeper Alex Walters made a leaping one-handed stop to diffuse the Brewers’ opportunity to net the equalizer.

Both teams used two goalkeepers in the contest. For NYU, Walters improved to 2-0 without needing to make a second-half save after relieving Rachael Ross, who stopped three shots in the first 45 minutes. Meanwhile, Ali Higgins played the first half and made five saves before yielding to Lexi Hutton who stopped two shots in the second half.

For the Brewers, junior Allison McMAnis had three shots, two on goal.
