MIDDLEBURY, VT (March 12, 2009) – Five different players scored two goals each and a stifling defense allowed just three goals, as the Vassar men’s lacrosse team notched its second straight victory defeating Castleton State College, 14-3, in a non-conference game played at Cohen Field at Middlebury College Thursday afternoon. The 14 goals represent the most the Brewers have scored since a 22-11 victory over Castleton State on April 27, 2003.

Now 2-1 on the season, the Brewers will face Kean College on Saturday, March 14 at 1:00 p.m. Castleton will open its conference schedule on Saturday with a road contest against Emerson College in Boston, MA.

The Brewers jumped out to an early 4-0 first period lead and never looked back as Castleton could not penetrate an unbending Brewers defense. Sophomore attack Sam Thypin-Bermeo (Princeton, NJ/Hun School) along with freshman Matthew Pearce (Alpharetta, GA/Alpharetta), senior Isaac Krull (Marblehead, MA/Marblehead) and junior Nick Cardillo (Honeoye Falls, NY/McQuaid Jesuit) all struck in succession to shift the Vassar offense into high gear. Castleton goalie Mike Mamunes kept the Spartans alive, turning away eight shots in the period, many of which came from point blank range.

For Castleton, Kevin McCarthy converted a Phil Barry assist just 48 seconds into the second period to give the Spartans some momentum, but Vassar quickly responded with three unanswered goals to end the period and take a 7-1 lead into halftime. Sophomore Sam Seymour (Winchester, MA/Winchester) and junior Sean Murray (Wyckoff, NJ/Deerfield Academy) each tallied for the Brewers, before Cardillo sent home his second of the afternoon.

Vassar was led by Thypin-Bermeo’s goal and two assists, while Cardillo, Seymour, Krull, freshman Jack Gross (Yarmouth, ME/Yarmouth) and freshman Christopher Toffoli (Lino Lakes, MN/Centennial) each added two scores. Sophomore Alex Tice (Oakland, CA/St. Ignatius Prep) earned the win in goal, stopping three shots while allowing one first half goal. Junior Ed Pappo (Malvern, PA/Conestoga) relieved Tice in the second half and stopped five shots.

McCarthy scored all three goals for Castleton, while Barry assisted on two and Jake Rick one. Mamunes wound up with nine saves, while allowing seven goals. Dave DeGhetto relieved Mamunes in the second half and turned away eight shots while allowing seven goals.
