12/21/2009
POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (December 21, 2009) – For the second straight week, freshman guard Jon Herzog of the Vassar College men’s basketball team has turned in the type of performance that has prompted the Liberty League to turn its head in recognition. For his efforts against Division I College of William and Mary, it was announced today that Herzog was named the league Rookie of the Week by the league.
Herzog scored a team-high 18 points on a career-best 7-for-10 shooting against the Tribe. He played a career-high 34 minutes, was 2-for-4 from three-point range, dished out three assists and had both of Vassar’s steals against the first Division I team the Brewers have played in 13 years. With a 7-2 record, William and Mary is off to its best start in since the 1977-78 season and is currently ranked No. 20 in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25 poll. In each of the last two weeks, the Tribe has received votes in both the Associated Press and ESPN/USA Today Top 25 polls. The Brewers lost to the Tribe 94-48.
The 18 points against William and Mary marked the third straight game that Herzog has reached double figures following a career-high 23 point outing against Hunter and 14 versus Williams College. On the season, Herzog ranks second in both scoring (9.9) and assists (2.0) per game.
“Jon was exceptional against William and Mary,” said Vassar head coach Del Harris. “He is really coming into his own as a player and getting better each time out.”
Herzog graduated from Greenwich High School in 2009 where he was a four-year letter winner in basketball. A three-time All-FCIAC member, Herzog was twice named the LaVista Christmas Tournament MVP. Herzog led his team in scoring, assists, and steals as a senior and was the league-leader in assists as a sophomore.
The Brewers ended the semester with a 2-7 record and will return to action on January 8 with a home game against Ramapo College at 7:00 p.m.
