NORTHAMPTON, MA (November 7, 2009) -- Epeeist Sophie Courser repeated her impressive top four finish from last year, finishing tied for third in the Big One Meet, the annual kickoff tournament for the fencing season held at Smith College.

The Vassar women's fencing team earned two medals at the meet, and according to head coach Bruce Gillman show the signs of a promising dual match season.

Sophomore Veronica Weser won two DE bouts, one more than last year and finished 14th in the epee. Freshmen Caitlin Clevenger and Chai Flegenheimer also good opening debuts on the collegiate fencing scene.

Sabre fencers Domino Gehred-O'Connell, Vanora Estridge, Jillian Josimovich, and Brooke Schieffer didn't advance far in the competition (Schieffer did advance to the first round of the DEs), but according to Gillman “all hung tough in the pool rounds and got a chance to gain important experience.”

Freshman foilist Katie LeClair had an impressive 7th place finish. Freshman Katharine Sweeney and sophomores Liz Ilechko and Alia Heintz all did well in pools and won a DE each.

The Brewers will be the dual match season next Sunday, November 15 at home in Walker Field House against Haverford, Hunter, Yeshiva, and Drew.
