POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (October 3, 2009) – The Vassar men's and women's rowing varsity 8+ teams had the opportunity to row against renowned competition in a memorable event on Saturday, participating in the Quadricentennial Poughkeepsie Regatta. The four-mile course ran from Roger's Point in Hyde Park, to the Mid-Hudson bridge in Poughkeepsie.

The women's varsity 8+ finished in sixth out of seven teams in a time of 27:28.91, beating out neighborhood opponent and host Marist College (28:05.25). Cornell University won the race with a time of 24:39.5, with Syracuse University (25:05.73) and the University of Pennsylvania (26:18.23) rounding out the top three. Columbia University (26:34.29) and Army (26:56.9) also participated in the race, finishing in fourth and fifth, respectively.

Racing in the heavyweight varsity 8+ category, Vassar's men's squad finished in fifth with a time of 28:36.51. Cornell won the race with a time of 23:15.5, followed by Army (24:02.92), Marist (24:11.34), and Columbia (24:42.07).

Hosted by Marist College, the race was an effort to bring back a historical tradition that began in 1895, when the Hudson River was home to the Intercollegiate Rowing Association's (IRA) National Championship race, the largest collegiate rowing championship in the nation. The race was also a part of this weekend's Grand Opening of the Walkway over the Hudson.
