SARATOGA, NY (October 31, 2009) -- On an unseasonably warm, late fall day in upstate New York, the Vassar College men’s cross-country team concluded its regular season at the RPI Invitational. Despite resting six of their top seven runners from the previous week, the men banded together for a 10th place finish. St. Lawrence University took the team title with 29 points, aided by Dan Ramsey’s first place finish in 25:21.
Vassar’s top finisher was sophomore
Will Healy, who placed 52nd overall in 28:21, after moving through the field considerably during the last two miles. Close behind was senior
Dan Liebowitz, finishing 65th in 28:46. Also breaking under 29 minutes was sophomore
Matt Blair, placing 72nd in a time of 28:58.
With a 22 second improvement over last week’s race on the same course, sophomore
Evan Russek used a strong 4th mile to propel himself to a 76th place finish in 29:00. Rounding out Vassar’s top five was senior
Ges Adams, with an 81st place finish in 29:11.
Also competing for the Brewers were freshman
Chris Lloyd (83rd, 29:21), senior
Ali Jamil (122nd, 30:40), freshman
Daniel Basch (123rd, 30:42), sophomore Zack Zeilman (138th, 31:55), freshman Rafael Ricuarte (144th, 32:32) and sophomore
David Reuss (151st, 33:30).
“Today was an exciting cap to the season for the majority of our team. Throughout the year, we’ve seen people put themselves out there, take risks, and show heart and strength. This race was a great way for those guys to come center stage,” said Head Coach James McCowan.
“For whatever reason, not a lot of our guys ran as strong as they did on the same course last weekend, but seeing Evan take well to the pressure and improve was great. All told, our team is coming together at the right time, building momentum to the Championship season, and I think everyone on the team is responsible for building the attitude that has gotten us here. One of those guys over four years has been Ali Jamil; he’s shown a lot of character and effort, season after season, and today was a solid end to his college cross-country career.”
For some of the team, the 2009 season comes to an end today. The remaining Brewers will compete next Saturday at the ECAC Championships, hosted by Williams College, and then at the Atlantic Regional Championships the following Saturday.
