POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (October 24, 2009) – Weather can be the great equalizer, but it can’t dampen an opponent that scores the game’s first goal within 13 seconds of play and tacks on another goal within the final three minutes of the opening half. Liberty League leading Hamilton parlayed those two elements in 2-0 victory over the Vassar field hockey team under rainy and humid conditions at Weinberg Field on Saturday afternoon.
The loss drops the Brewers to 2-15, 0-6. Vassar will play its final league game of the season on Sunday against St. Lawrence at 1:00 p.m. Hamilton, now 8-3, 5-1, travels to Rensselaer for its final regular season league game on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
The Continentals produced all the game’s offense in the first half. Hamilton took the rainy and damp conditions out of the game’s equation when junior forward Carly Andrascik scored the contests first goal just 13 seconds into the game. It followed an initial shot by junior forward Colleen Callaghan and was neatly tucked past junior goalie
Rachel Horwitz and into the Vassar cage.
The insurance goal came at a critical juncture, with just under three minutes to play in the half. Sophomore midfielder Erin McNally converted a penalty corner goal off a feed from freshman midfielder Charlotte Lescroart and it provided Hamilton with an important 2-0 cushion heading into the second half, one that was played under a steady rain and windy conditions.
Hamilton controlled play, rarely allowing the Brewers past midfield, and on those occasions, the Continental defense formed a wall around senior goalie Courtney DeMaria and stopped any movement toward goal. Vassar’s best first half threat came in the games 20th minute when senior
Jordan Friedmann collected a bouncing ball through the middle that she adeptly chased down. Her progression toward goal was stopped by Hamilton senior defender Amy Allen.
For the game, Hamilton outshot Vassar 16-4 and held a slight 6-5 advantage in penalty corners. Vassar had three of its penalty corners in the second half, but was unable to capitalize on any.
Vassar goalie Horwitz made seven saves in the game while DeMaria made two strong saves off Vassar junior
Jessica Lance late in the second half.
