POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (October 14, 2009) -- The Vassar College women’s volleyball team continued its winning ways on Wednesday night with a convincing 3-0 victory (25-13, 25-19, 25-21) over Hunter College on Wednesday, October 14, 2009 at Kenyon Hall. The win came on Vassar’s second annual “Dig Pink” night, where the Brewers team up with The Side-Out Foundation to raise awareness and funds to aid breast cancer organizations.

The win puts the Brewers on a four-game winning streak, as they improve to 14-5. Vassar will next compete on Saturday, October 17tin a tri-match against Mount Saint Mary College and Bard College at 11 a.m. at Mount Saint Mary’s. Hunter falls to 14-11 with the loss and will return home to host Brooklyn College in a CUNY conference matchup on Tuesday, October 20th at 4 p.m.

Sophomore captain Amy Bavosa led the Brewers with 11 kills in the match, while freshman Chloe McGuire and senior Sarah Potts had 9 and 8 kills, respectively. Junior Chelsea Mottern had a match-high 18 digs on the night, while freshman Hilary Koenigs, after receiving Liberty League Rookie of the Week honors on Monday for the fourth time this season, continued her masterful play with 35 set assists.

Hunter was led by junior Tracey Igwe with eight kills and a pair of five kill efforts from sophomore Mallory Grubler and sophomore Christine Luebcke. Sophomore setter Katina Boutis has 23 assists and six digs.

Hunter came closest to stealing a set from the Brewers in the third and final set. The Hawks came out strong, grabbing an early 4-0 lead. Vassar rallied back to tie the set at four, and the two teams battled back and forth for the majority of the set with a couple of impressive rallies. With the set tied at 19, it looked like the Brewers were going to take over behind kills from senior Sarah Potts, but the Hawks refused to go down easy, rallying behind multiple kills from Igwe. Vassar was finally able to put the Hawks away, 25-21, after a thunderous kill from Bavosa ended the set.

The Hawks kept the second match fairly close as well, as they held a small lead early on thanks to multiple kills from sophomore hitter Mallory Grubler. Despite early attack and service errors, Vassar managed to tie the set at 19 after a kill from senior Tess Johnson. The Brewers scored six of the next seven points to win the set 25-19, receiving three kills from Potts and a kill and solo block from Bavosa.

In the first set, Vassar showed their depth with six different players recording kills. Vassar was dominant throughout the set, stretching a lead as great as 17-9. Bavosa had six kills in the first set alone, while McGuire had four of her own.
